The telescope is designed to make its observations in the infrared (with limited capability for observations in the visible range of the spectrum) and will carry four separate instruments to do so:\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jwst.nasa.gov\/nircam.html\" target=\"_blank\">Near InfraRed Camera<\/a> (NIRCam), the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jwst.nasa.gov\/nirspec.html\" target=\"_blank\">Near InfraRed Spectrograph<\/a> (NIRSpec), the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jwst.nasa.gov\/miri.html\">Mid-InfraRed Instrument<\/a> (MIRI), and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jwst.nasa.gov\/fgs.html\">Fine Guidance Sensor Tunable Filter Camera<\/a> (FGS-TFI). We already make infrared observations from Earth-based telescopes (at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keckobservatory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Keck<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/mko\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mauna Kea Observatories<\/a> in Hawaii, for instance), but even at those high altitudes, the earth&#8217;s atmosphere can cause blurring. Thus, the need for a telescope outside our atmosphere, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jwst.nasa.gov\/orbit.html\" target=\"_blank\">1.5 million km outside our atmosphere<\/a>, in this case.<\/p>\n<p>To get the wallpaper, click the image and scroll down the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jwst.nasa.gov\/downloads.html\" target=\"_blank\">downloads page<\/a>.
