At 2396 m, the elevation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iac.es\/eno.php?op1=2&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">Roque de los Muchachos Observatory<\/a>\u00a0on La Palma doesn&#8217;t come close to that of the <a href=\"https:\/\/astronomy.snjr.net\/blog\/?p=205\" target=\"_blank\">Sphinx Observatory<\/a>\u00a0(3571 m), but it&#8217;s not too far behind the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/astronomy.snjr.net\/blog\/?p=469\" target=\"_blank\">Pic du Midi de Bigorre Observatory<\/a> (2877 m) and it far surpasses <a href=\"https:\/\/astronomy.snjr.net\/blog\/?cat=16\" target=\"_blank\">Lick Observatory<\/a> (1329 m).<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Roque de los Muchachos Observatory comprises one half of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iac.es\/eno.php?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">European Northern Observatory<\/a>;\u00a0the other half consists of the Teide Observatory on Tenerife (2390 m, if you&#8217;re curious). Both institutions are operated by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iac.es\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">Instituto de Astrof\u00edsica de Canarias<\/a>\u00a0(IAC).\u00a0The ENO represents more of Europe than you might guess (seriously, since when does the Canary Islands speak for an entire subcontinent?). Much of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iac.es\/eno.php?op1=2&amp;op2=3&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">the instrumentation<\/a> was provided by Denmark, Sweden, and the UK, and eight European countries signed up to be charter members of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iac.es\/eno.php?op1=5&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">International Scientific Committee<\/a> (CCI) associated with the IAC.
